New Sergeant for June
A very funny remark from Alan Sinnott at a recent Monday night meeting, where he noted the trend in shortening names, eg Scott Morrison is Sc Mo, Jennifer Lopez is J Lo, and renamed our May Sergeant Bill Connell as "Bill Co"!

Many thanks for keeping the meeting to time and the members to order, Sergeant for May, Bill.

And so It is my pleasure to announce, for the last time, the Sergeant for June has been selected, at random, in the one and only Dave 'Woodsy' Wood. Thank you Woodsy
Proverbs, idioms and origins

The goose that laid the golden egg

..to destroy something that makes you rich, successful, etc. through greed

From a fable by Aesop about a peasant farmer who had the good fortune to own a goose that laid golden eggs.

The peasant thought that if he killed the goose he could get all the eggs at once. However, by killing the goose, he lost his source of future wealth

Winter Solstice

Winter solstice was last Friday 21 June 2019

Here in Australia, we're celebrating the winter solstice - an astronomical phenomenon that occurs each year in June as the Earth orbits the sun. It is the shortest day of the year and the longest night, and the point at which the earth begins her slow turn towards the light

From the 21st, the days in Australia and the rest of the Southern hemisphere will continue to get longer as the earth continues to orbit the sun, getting closer to the sun each day until it reaches the December summer solstice

The solstice has been observed for many thousands of years, as long as people have marked time by the skies, and its a wonderful time of year to retreat inwards and reflect on the wonders of nature
