Rotary Club of Moe
Di’s Dialogue #85
Saturday was a cold, blustery winters day for a BBQ. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful success. The BBQ was held in Moe Botanic Gardens from 11.00am-2.00pm, specifically to welcome a new group of Fijians into our community. Firstly, I would like to thank Community Chair, Alan Bishop, and members of that committee, Lyn Cassar, Ross Maxfield, Len Cairns, and Bill Connell, for volunteering time to prepare the club BBQ trailer, cook the snags, and organise tea/coffee. It was also good to see Sandy Auger (Prospective Rotarian) with her dog, Pippa. President David McInnes, together with several members from the Rotary Club of Morwell, also assisted with the BBQ and provided a variety of salads. Special thanks for the onions!! No BBQ is complete without the onions. Fortunately, accessing the Moe Tennis Clubrooms proved to be a very strategic move and lunch was eaten in comfortable surroundings. Other attendees included fourteen Fijians, representatives from St Vinnies, (Margaret McQuillan and Carmel), and Pam Wood and Lisa Dourley, from a new Rotary cause-based provisional club called ‘Rotary International Positive Peace’ (RIPP). The ‘Welcome BBQ’ was the group’s first club activity and they initially reached out to fellow Rotarians to seek ways to support the newly arrived Fijians. It was lovely to chat with many of the Fijians who braved the cold conditions and attended the BBQ. Apologies were offered on behalf of several who were not able to attend due to finishing night shift or having to work on Saturday. They have been in Australia for four weeks and expressed much appreciation for the support and care for their welfare shown by many people in our broader community. After the BBQ lunch, we were treated to a traditional kava ceremony held undercover at the tennis club. The group gathered outside on a traditional woven mat with a specially carved wooden kava bowl. Kava was drunk by several Rotarians accompanied by hearty shouts of ‘Bula’ and hand clapping. A wonderful way to end a BBQ lunch!
As a club, I hope we can continue our connections with the group and invite them to activities/events that provide them with opportunities to engage as volunteers.
Back to our club activities, Program coordinator, Roger Taylor, has included information in the bulletin regarding our program for the next few weeks. On Monday, we have two guest speakers, with the main presentation by Adrian Marks from ‘Workways’ speaking about ‘Transition to Work.’
Lastly, for those who can spend time with mothers, grandmothers, daughters, in-laws, and grandchildren, enjoy the special time. Mother’s Day is an important day to reflect on the many women who have or had an important place in our lives.
I am particularly looking forward to Sunday when my mother-in law will be meeting her youngest great-grand daughter, Freya, for the first time. It will also be special to have my own daughter enjoying her first ‘Mother’s Day.’
A special shout out to all the mothers in our club! I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing day.
Just a reminder for Chairs to prepare and forward their reports to me as soon as possible. I am aiming to have the annual report finalized and ready for printing by the end of May.
Also, if any member has any photos that they have taken at Rotary events throughout the year, please send through as well.
